Walking for Refuge: “It’s a small gesture and if it helps even one family, I’ll de delighted.”

January 30, 2023

WORLDWIDE’S Communication Director will be stepping out in February to take part in a walking challenge to raise money for the largest domestic abuse organisation in the UK.

Refuge, which empowers women to live without violence and fear, has organised the ‘56 Miles in February for Refuge’ challenge and Eleanor McGillie will be out and about putting the miles in while raising funds to support Refuge’s services.

Money raised by participants across the UK will be used to fund services which support thousands of women and their children, helping them to overcome the physical, emotional, financial and logistical impacts of abuse and rebuild their lives – free from fear.

Speaking about the challenge, Eleanor said: “One in four women will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime, every 30 seconds the police receive a call for help relating to domestic abuse and thousands of women and children are supported by Refuge on any given day. Two women per week are killed by a current or former partner. These figures are shocking. Domestic abuse is wrong on every level whether it’s physical or emotional abuse.

“The thought of a woman, man, or child living in fear, witnessing or experiencing violence or abuse and not feeling safe, is horrendous and it has to end. Domestic abuse is devastating and the work Refuge does is commendable. It provides safe accommodation for women and children  escaping domestic abuse while providing access to one-to-one emotional and practical support; it helps women, who have been suffering economic abuse, take back control of their finances, provides support for children and helps women to be secure in their use of technology so they cannot be harassed or intimidated. Refuge also offers support in the community and advocates a victim’s rights be that through civil and criminal courts, housing, health and education.

"Being a part of this challenge is very humbling. Many of the women taking part are women like me who thankfully have never experienced any form of abuse but many are women who have been beaten, had their finances controlled, suffered coercive behaviour, live with emotional abuse, sexual violence and tech abuse. Some are survivors and some are still living with the abuse. It's frightening to think about it let alone live through it.

"We all have our nine basic emotional needs – one of which of course is security. Everyone should feel safe in their homes. I am looking forward to the challenge. It’s a small gesture but if it helps even one family then I’ll be delighted."

Times are challenging for many people right now but if you are in the position to make a donation, no matter how small, it will contribute to helping Refuge help women in need of help. Please just click Eleanor's JustGiving Page here -  https://bit.ly/3YcG12D
